What to Expect

What warts are: warts are skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They are most common on the hands and on the soles of the feet (plantar warts).

Assessment first: a physician or nurse practitioner confirms the growth is a wart and recommends a treatment, such as cryotherapy (freezing) or electrosurgery.

Treatment: brief cold or stinging is normal. Many warts need more than one treatment, a few weeks apart.

Aftercare: a blister may form. Keep the area clean and follow your provider’s instructions.

See a provider sooner if a growth changes, bleeds, or if you have diabetes and a wart on your foot.

Who wart treatment at Chinook is for

We see adults and children from across SW Calgary with common warts on the hands and fingers, plantar warts on the soles of the feet, and skin tags that catch on clothing or jewellery. Warts are common and are not a sign of poor hygiene. They can spread to other areas of skin or to other people, so many patients prefer to have them looked at rather than wait.

Your visit, step by step

  1. Check in with your Alberta Health Care card and photo ID.
  2. Assessment. A physician or nurse practitioner looks at the growth and asks how long you have had it and what you have already tried.
  3. Options. If it is a wart, they explain the treatment options that suit its size and location, such as freezing (cryotherapy), and what aftercare involves.
  4. Treatment. When treatment is appropriate it may be done at the same visit. Some warts need more than one session a few weeks apart.
  5. Follow-up. A growth that does not look like a typical wart may need more assessment or a referral.

When to have a wart checked

  • It is painful, spreading or keeps coming back
  • It changes colour or shape, or bleeds
  • It is on your face or genitals
  • You have diabetes or poor circulation and the growth is on your foot
  • You are not sure whether it is a wart

Alberta Health Care coverage and fees

Coverage depends on the treatment and the reason for it. Some cosmetic treatments, including some skin tag removals, are not covered by Alberta Health Care. Fees, if any, are explained before treatment so you can decide. Ask the front desk if you have questions.
